Thoughts On A Tuesday

Here's some stuff I meant to share last week.

*Who loves Wes Anderson? I do! How can you not? Have you had a chance to checkout the trailer for his latest, Moonrise Kingdom? No!? Well, do it. Then, check out these animated posters:

Game of Thrones Review: "Garden of Bones"

By Amanda Lowery

Last Night’s Episode of Game of Thrones “Garden of Bones” was the first episode written by Vanessa Taylor, and it was a strong effort that kept in line beautifully with themes permeating across scenes and making the episode a solid piece of this magnificent behemoth of a story. This episode dealt a lot with ethics, torture, and some stellar female inner strength and really made us question who is good and who is evil.

Sign(s) Of The Decline

Here's something new we're doing here at the NSD. We will highlight a news story (or stories) that show(s) us that we just may all be doomed. People are saying and doing more in the name of stupidity than ever before. Just when it looks as though progress has been made, someone takes us back to time of the Caveman. Today's story was suggested by a beloved co-worker of mine, Jamie Whitbread. Thanks for the heads up on this, another sign of the decline of our civilization.

Game of Thrones Review: What is Dead May Never Die

By: Amanda Lowery

Spoilers ahead...both book and series

This week’s episode of Game of Thrones What is Dead May Never Die continues to explore the definition of power and the constant collision of Kings and Gods. Beginning beyond the wall, Jon Snow takes a beating to his pretty face and pride as Craster catches him spying. Jon Snow now knows what Craster does with his sons, he sacrifices them, and the chill runs deeper when he finds out that the Lord Commander already knows. Mormont tells Jon that the Wildlings serve crueler Gods than they do, but as the series continues to unfold I think we can all agree that all the Gods in Westeros are just as cruelly served by their believers. Sam shares a sweet moment with Gilly, giving the poor girl the innocent token he carries as a reminder of his mother: a thimble. Thimbles protect fingers, not incest babies, but it was a refreshing contrast to the darkness that defines Gilly’s small world.

MEET OUR FRIENDS: Swimp Thang

One of cool things about blogging/writing/playing shows/etc is that we get to meet a lot of awesome, talented people. We'd like to introduce our friends over at Swimp Thang (that's not a typo).

Andrew and Matt are  a lot like us here at the NSD. They're into movies, video games, tv shows, comics, and general geek/nerd stuff. They have an awesome BasementCast (Podcast) where they discuss everything from arcade games to b-movies to cartoons to Magic: The Gathering. It's pretty rad.

Here's were you can find and listen to Swimp Thang...

Game Of Thrones Review: 'The Night Lands'

by Amanda Lowery

POSSIBLE SPOILERS!

Game of Thrones is very much a show that must be taken in as a sum of its parts. With such a far reaching and complex story to tell, some episodes seem more focused on establishing character motives and providing the audience with more background information as opposed to an action filled plot focused entirely on movement. I feel like Episode 2 ‘The Night Lands’ was that kind of episode, making it no less crucial, but definitely requiring a different mode of engagement from viewers. In this episode we really needed to pay attention to the relationship between all of these characters, because how the story plays out has everything to do with their individualized emotional motivation.

Help With That "LOST" Feeling

Amanda Lowery
-NSD Writer

I recently read an article outlining the viewership blessing of Game of Thrones as a substitute for the engaging, metaphysically mind boggling, and fantastically scientific hit series LOST. At first I agreed, because I am officially obsessed with Game of Thrones. I am reading the fourth novel in the ‘A Song of Ice and Fire’ series and also keeping pace with the show, devouring each episode several times to make sure I understand why the literary genius was adapted on the screen the way it was. However, I do not think that Game of Thrones alone has filled the vacancy in our minds and hearts left by six seasons of LOST.

Thoughts On A Monday

We're back after a week absent. I was busy moving my life, SO here's some thoughts...

*Game Of Thrones premiered it's Second Season last night and *whew* what a way to start it off! If you have not watched Season One, read Book One, OR you've yet to view last nights episode BEWARE OF SPOILERS! The premiere of the first season ended with incestuous intercourse AND a grown man (participating in said bro on sis intercourse) pushing a child out of a castle window to the ground waayyy down below. How do you top that?? You kill EM-EFFIN' babies! Something tells me we are in for quite the second season!
